Sinterklaas, the holey saint, arrived in Holland November 13, 1999, together with his helps: the 'zwarte pieten', his white horse, and his steamboat.
All Dutch children write letters to him, make drawings, place their shoes before the chimney or the door, sing songs and hope to find some sweets in their shoe the next morning. Then at night Sinterklaas rides with his horse and his zwarte pieten over the roofs and distributes sweets and letters and gifts.
December the 5th is very exciting. Then at that day Sinterklaas celebrates his birthday and at night he visits many families and rides across the roofs for the last time. After this long night, he quietly disappears back to Spain...
